Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has reaffirmed the platform’s commitment to crime prevention and content moderation, stating that Telegram has exceeded its legal obligations in combating illegal activities. His remarks, shared in a March 17 Telegram post, come amid ongoing scrutiny from French authorities investigating the platform’s role in addressing criminal content.
Durov’s statement follows his return to Dubai, where he resumed operations after a period of legal uncertainty. He expressed gratitude to Telegram’s global user base, emphasizing that the platform’s nearly 1 billion-strong community remains resilient in the face of challenges.
Telegram has faced criticism over its handling of illicit activities, including allegations from French officials that the platform had not done enough to curb child exploitation, drug trafficking, and online hate crimes. These concerns led to Durov’s arrest in August 2024, intensifying the pressure on Telegram to enhance its content moderation policies.
In response, Telegram has implemented stricter guidelines, updating its FAQ section to reflect a more proactive approach to reporting and removing illegal content. The platform has also reinforced its commitment to eliminating child sexual abuse material (CSAM), terrorist propaganda, and fraudulent schemes.
Despite ongoing investigations, Durov remains optimistic about Telegram’s future, reiterating his commitment to ensuring user safety while maintaining the platform’s principles of free communication. He acknowledged the challenges but underscored the resilience of Telegram’s global community, stating, “There is nothing our billion-strong community can’t overcome.”
