highlights

  • Vitalik Buterin advocates for highly decentralized and permissionless DAOs with formal membership.
  • He addresses the tradeoff between ApeCoin’s open governance and Zuzalu’s more restrictive access.
  • Buterin envisions a significant shift in Ethereum's roadmap, emphasizing decentralized governance.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed his hope for a future where decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) adopt more formalized, highly decentralized, and permissionless membership structures. He notes that current systems, including those of ApeCoin and Zuzalu, have varying degrees of permissioned governance, with room for evolution.

In a recent discussion, Buterin explained that all currencies, including those in DAOs, are inherently permissioned. Becoming a participant in a DAO typically requires the approval of existing members, which creates a continuous spectrum of governance models. This includes the open, permissionless nature of ApeCoin and the more exclusive structure of Zuzalu.

Buterin also proposes adopting a quadratic funding-style mechanism to assign membership points based on existing members' influence. This model could help DAOs like Optimism's Citizens’ House and Zuzalu create more decentralized membership structures without relying solely on token holdings.

Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter), Buterin highlighted the governance challenges faced by DAOs, particularly around gatekeeping. He noted that highly open forums, like those of ApeCoin, often require "heavy-handed moderation" due to the risk of spam and irrelevant posts. In contrast, Zuzalu’s governance structure, which grants access based on participation in its popup city events, represents a more restricted model.

ApeCoin’s forum, open to the entire Web3 community, and Arbitrum’s DAO, accessible to anyone online, illustrate the diverse governance approaches in the space. While these open structures promote inclusivity, they also pose risks to project integrity.

Buterin’s increasing social media presence, especially his insights into Ethereum's roadmap, has led to heightened market activity. The prices of key altcoins, including ApeCoin, Arbitrum, and Optimism, have seen noticeable changes:

  • APE surged 110% within a week following the announcement of ApeChain, an Arbitrum Orbit layer-3 blockchain. The price stands at $1.61, after peaking at $1.74.
  • ARB saw a 1% daily rise and a 7% weekly gain, trading at $0.5883, with a 95% jump in trading volume over 24 hours.
  • Optimism (OP), despite Buterin’s support for its Superchain ERC20 update, has seen slower price momentum, with a 3% increase over the past month. OP is currently priced at $1.74.

Buterin's vision for a more decentralized future and enhanced governance mechanisms may continue to influence market dynamics, particularly as more DAOs experiment with permissionless models.
