According to the 2025 State of Crypto Holders Report commissioned by the National Cryptocurrency Association, approximately 21% of Americans—or around 55 million adults—now own some form of cryptocurrency. The extensive survey, conducted by The Harris Poll, found that 76% of these holders believe crypto has had a positive impact on their personal lives, suggesting growing mainstream acceptance and utility.
The report outlines a shifting demographic landscape. While 67% of crypto holders are under 45, older generations are increasingly represented, with those over 55 now comprising 15% of the user base. The gender gap is also narrowing, with women accounting for 31% of holders. Additionally, crypto adoption has spread across income brackets, with 26% of crypto-owning households earning under $75,000 annually, thanks in part to crypto’s low entry barrier.
Notably, crypto is being used for more than just investment. About 39% of holders make purchases with it—most at least once a year—while 31% send funds to family or friends, and another 31% accept it as payment in business. The majority of users entered the crypto space out of curiosity or as a means to secure their financial future.
Despite concerns over scams, volatility, and taxation, only 3% reported negative experiences, and even then, most incidents involved fraud or security breaches. A large portion of users reported benefits like enhanced financial independence (49%) and personal growth (45%).
Public sentiment toward regulation is generally positive, with 64% favoring government oversight. However, 67% expressed concern that poorly designed rules could hinder innovation, while 73% said they want the U.S. to take a leadership role in global crypto development. The report highlights a broad commitment to continued learning, with high interest in areas like investing, tax, blockchain technology, and safety practices.
Overall, the survey portrays a diverse and engaged community that sees digital assets as both personally empowering and structurally transformative.
